Biogas plants in the power generation industry

  • Flow measurement of wet biogas with changing composition
  • Class 1 certified measurement of produced heat energy
  • Systems for biometane processing and injection to the grid

Biogas is a product of the digestion of sludge in wastewater treatment plants or landfills, and also the decomposition of organic raw materials such as agricultural waste. The great advantage of the gas is that it is easy to store and transport, and that it can be used as an energy source in the production of electrical and thermal energy in power-heat cogeneration plants. With the appropriate connection option, biogas can be processed to gas transport quality and fed into the natural gas grid.

Various measurements are required for the efficient production of biogas. The methane content needs to be measured accurately during the whole process and the measuring instruments must withstand the harsh conditions that exist in biogas plants such as corrosion and build-up. Flowmeters need to be able to measure wet, saturated and uncleaned gas. KROHNE meets these requirements with the OPTISONIC 7300 Biogas version of their ultrasonic flowmeter and delivers accurate results with the OPTIFLUX electromagnetic flowmeters which have the capability to cope with a high solids content, while measuring the flow of substrate. In bio-methane applications we can deliver a dedicated ultrasonic flowmeter for custody-transfer measurement – the ALTOSONIC V12 Biogas. It is superior to classic mechanical counters since it is maintenance-free and it measures volume without flow straightener and without losing any line pressure.
